WHEN

The 2017 Australian Rogaining Championships will be held on 6-7 May 2017 in some very ridgy didge country between Canberra and Cooma.  The event is hosted by the ACT Rogaining Association.  Autumn is a very pleasant time of year for rogaining and visiting some of the local mountains.

The course has already been set by the very experienced team of Ron Simpson and Jeannie Douglass who have set a number of recent ACT championship courses and won mixed superveteran titles at World and Australian championships. There will be excellent navigational challenges in open eucalypt forest. You might even spot a koala on the course!

THE AREA

Most of the course area is on private property with the very kind permission of some ten landowners.  A large section of the course is owned by Mr Laurrie Scheele who has a real estate business in Canberra.  The area has never been cleared for farming and retains its native bush cover - eucalypt forest with a very open understorey making for pleasant and fast travel in most areas.

Remains from gold mining activity will make the Victorians feel at home.

One large block is managed specifically for its conservation values including koala habitat. There are koalas in this area and they are renowned for consuming the bark of the eucalypts as well as the leaves.

A few 4WD tracks cross the course but most of your navigation will be off trail.

Embargoed area

The rogaine area is embargoed from now until the event. Apart from this being mostly private property, the embargoed area is defined by the Bredbo River, Peak View road, Numeralla River and the Monaro Highway. If you are unsure and think you may need to enter this area, please contact us beforehand.
