This year's 6 hour Paddy event was on the western edge of the Tallaganda National Park - about an hours drive east of Canberra. The area was mostly National Park with some private land. There were also fire trails and small tracks to make travel easier. Wombats, lyre birds and wallabies abound. Relief ranged from 850m to 1,100m with some great views over the ranges.

Naas, Clear and Grassy: ACT Championships and 30th birthday, 21st Sep 2013
Don McLean, posted on 22nd Oct 2013
Barkley is ACTRA's koala mascot - check out the story of his recent ACT Champs experience with Michael Challen and Don McLean (team 7)
Naas Valley beckoned on 21-22 Sep, a favourite area of mine with lots of delicious gum trees. After helping with the 30th birthday cake decorating, and posing for a few photos, it was time to find a team to partner up with. The open koala category is always low on numbers so this time I decided to team up with Don & Chalky as I heard that they had a good chance of placing well (given that they were the only team entered in the men's vets category). I thought that they might also need some of my advice on the course as well because Don seemed to be a little out of his depth during the prep time - giving me a great photo opportunity when I posed with him and his laminated map with the control descriptions over the top of the map instead of behind, a real newbie mistake.
At 12 sharp, after getting a quick refresher on how to deal with snake bites, we were off. Chalky had planned a route for us that aimed to clear the westerly map and we had plenty of company on our way to our first control, number 50. We got into a routine fairly quickly after I requested a photo of myself at the first control (bit hard for a selfie with my short arms) and then decided that I had better get one at each control because the nice admin staff had forgotten to give me my NavLight wrist band.
The weather was great and we were having a rewarding time finding each of the controls that we navigated to, just where the course setters had indicated on the map they should be. Things got a little dicey about 3 hrs in though when Chalky started to pull up lame (with a torn calf muscle as it turned out). Don thought he was going to be able to get back to their tent for a nice cozy sleep after raiding the night kitchen but Chalky had other plans and wasn't going to let me miss out on my photo opportunities.
We pushed on through the night developing a new routine where Chalky would limp through the bush frequently explaining to no one in particular, in rather colourful language, his level of pain. This proved quite helpful for Don locating Chalky in the bush as he waited up ahead for Chalky and I to catch up. I'd been munching on a few gum leaves though and you know how us koala's are, we're happy to take it slow and easy.
In the end we didn't clear all of the westerly map but we gave it a good run. I only had to help the boys reset once when they couldn't find control 78 navigating from control 86. I kept the boys calm when they couldn't originally find the control and got them back onto the track to the south-west before following the tracks to the indistinct track to the north to use as a different attach point - with success this time. Time for a celebration after that as it was over 2 hrs since we'd scored control 78.
We were in for a frosty time as we headed back into the valley in the wee hours of Sunday to clear controls 47, 48 and 33 with the boys having to put on some extra layers; I still had my winter fur coat to keep me toastie though.
We were in for a treat as we hiked back along vehicle track in the valley alongside Naas Creek on a nice sunny Sunday morning when some of the admin team pulled up in their subi (the vehicle of choice for any self-respecting rogainer) and offered us some encouragement and chocolate birthday cake; not to my liking of course, being much more partial to gum leave, but the boys certainly got a boost from it as they strolled along the track in lovely morning sunshine heading back towards the easterly map again.
Using the bridge between 56 & 32, the ford at 33 and then a random tree stump across the river between 79 & 66 we, well the boys, managed to keep their feet pretty dry throughout the event until their final crossing near 41 on their way back to the HH. There they had no option but to jump in and wade across the creek. By then the end was in sight though and Don was able to coax Chalky on enough to push on through the pain and get back to the HH with just minutes to spare before the clock ticked over 24 hrs.
A great 24 hr hour event for me in some spectacular country side, and another win in my open koala category, although as usual I'm still waiting for my trophy. Looking forward to my next rogaine adventures when I'll try a find another team to help around the course.
Yours in gum leaf happiness,
Barkley.
The 2007 cycle rogaine was held 25 minutes from Canberra in eastern Kowen Forest and Sparrow Hill. Lots of fun riding on forest trails and smooth singletrack. High quality pre-marked map. Foot entrants also welcomed.

What a great day!
ACT cycle rogaine, 6th May 2007

This was my first rogaine and I gotta say it was the most fun day I've ever spent on a pushbike, I mean it! The only thing aching today is my jaw from laughing so much...great team. Everybody was thoroughly enjoying themselves, you could tell from the smiles, in that beautiful country immersed in the those excellent maps. For me the whole thing turned into an amazing treasure hunt for the numbered markers, can't wait for the next one. Thanks to everybody from ACTRA who spent time putting a fantastic event together so that I could have fun.

My first cycle rogaine
ACT cycle rogaine, 6th May 2007
Jason Lee, posted on 9th May 2007
The first germ of the idea to take part in this event came when I was looking for partners for the 6 hour rogaine back in March. I had been casually asking around to see if anyone wanted to do that one with me. My friend Helen told me that she didn't run, but if ever a cycle rogaine came up, she would be interested.
So, I found other partners for that event but as the date for the cycle rogaine approached, I again began thinking about entering. But there was a problem. I don't own a mountain bike! I asked Helen again and she said that if I could get hold of a mountain bike, she would do it (and she had never done a cycle rogaine before either). I don't think Helen thought I'd be successful in borrowing a bike but I was! I got hold of a Giant Rincon in my size which by Giant's definition was definitely not a 'competition' or 'trail' bike, but a 'sport' or 'recreation' bike. But a bike was a bike and we entered.
I had never ridden single track before. My only other experience of 'mountain bikes' were clunky commuters on wide fire trails... So the week before the event, Helen took me out to Sparrow Hill for my first experience with single track and my first ride on the borrowed Rincon. I didn't come off and I had fun in the 2 hours we spent there. So it boded well for the weekend to come.
I built my own map board out of a plastic clipboard I picked up at K-mart for four bucks attached to the bike with zip ties. Cheap! And very simple and functional, when I saw some of the high-tech contraptions that some other competitiors were using.
We were 15 minutes late in starting because of some fumbling with gear and route planning. But we finally started. Our original plan was to take in all the checkpoints at Sparrow Hill first. Then, to cross the highway and get all the points worth 70 or more in the eastern half of the map. Big plans. In reality...
We made comfortable progress in our course through Sparrow Hill and were reviewing our progress before heading off across the highway when I noticed that we had missed the second checkpoint we had planned! Checkpoint 80! Do we go back for it or cross the highway? We went back for it. By the time we crossed the highway, the time was 1330. Only two hours left. Decision time.
We decided we would try to get the furthest two checkpoints in the North-East corner of the map, 101 and 93. Legs feeling like jelly after every climb, we finally reached 101. And Helen had to walk up several hills. We should have cut our losses then and headed for the Hash House, but no... We were gluttons for punishment. We weren't that far from 93. There was still some time. The control description promised 'views'. So we pushed on to 93. We only had a quick glimpse of the great 'views' but a glance of the clock showed that we didn't have much time to get back.
So came the frantic rush back to the Hash House. More hills to climb, more hills to walk up. More heavy lifting of bikes across gates. When we made it back, we were 16 minutes late!
Ah well... At least we had a tremendously fun time. Congrats to all the organisers and volunteers!
I must buy a mountain bike soon...
Foot 6 hour / Bike 6 hour 09:30 - 15:30, 6 hrs |
The course encompassed the surrounds of western Lake Burley Griffin, and the slopes of Black Mountain, Red Hill and Mt Stromlo. Travel around the course by bike path, fire trails and off tracks with very few roads, but small children better in a back-pack than in a pram. Being a true metrogaine there was a selection of cafes on the course as well. The course was set with both foot competitors and bike competitors in mind. We suggest mountain bikes are probably the most suitable style of bike.
Solo entries are allowed.

The area for the 2007 ACTRA Paddy Pallin 6 Hour Rogaine at Wild Cattle Creek is located in mountainous terrain to the south east of Captains Flat, and includes part of Tallaganda National Park. The elevation of the course is from around 900 to around 1200 metres. The map for the event has been specially prepared by combining two orienteering maps - Ballinafad Creek and Wild Cattle Creek. The special orienteering symbols have been removed so the map looks similar to a normal survey map, with light green shading for forest and white for open areas. Creeks, marshes, roads and fences are shown but no rock details. The map scale is 1:25000 but, as the contour interval is 5 metres, the picture of the terrain is more accurate than with usual survey maps (thus allowing for more precise location of controls).
The map includes a small amount of open farmland and some grassy gullies but the bulk of the terrain is forest without a significant track network. It is some time since there was a significant bush fire in the area. Further away from the Hash House the terrain becomes quite steep in parts, but the going is not difficult on the hillsides as the undergrowth is generally not thick.
The NSW National Parks website describes the highlights of the Tallaganda National park as follows: Two sections of the Great Dividing Range south-east of Canberra support a range of forest habitats, including stringybark, scribbly gum, brown barrel and peppermint forest, as well as subalpine snow gum and mountain gum forest. The area provides habitats for threatened species such as the spotted-tailed quoll, powerful owl and yellow-bellied glider.
There are also the usual number of birds (including lyre birds) as well as a few wombats, kangaroos, wallabies and the occasional snake.
