Hello rogainers - or should I say nogainers?! If you have ever tried to write about a rogaine you will probably have experienced your spellchecker's desire to rebrand the event as a 'regaine'. Well perhaps now that reference to hair growth could be the correct term after all, as—after a couple of months of essential outings only—not only can we look forward to seeing our hairdressers again, but we can realistically anticipate squeezing in one or even two more cross-country navigation events before the end of the year.
In case you have not been keeping up your two hours of strenuous physical activity, ACTRA has plans to get you out of your masks and into the bush. Route planning will not be completely free, however, as we will of course continue to follow the appropriate pathway forward, aka directions and guidance from our health officials. This will certainly mean taking proper hygiene precautions at the start/finish, and is likely to necessitate limiting entry numbers. Regrettably you can also expect the Hash House to be hash-free, but it will still be good to get out there with your teams of between two and five friends or family members.
Read on for details of a possible late Spring rogaine and the proposed date for the deferred Twilight 3-hour near Lake Burley Griffin. We're looking forward to re-gaining the forests and seeing you all again soon.
Spring 6/12 hr - Tentative
Barkley will be on hand to welcome you back!
If the ACT and NSW Governments allow, the ACT Spring rogaine will be held on the 20 November (fingers crossed). You’ll be able to choose a 6 hour or 12 hour course and given you’ve been bush starved for so long, the 12 hour option could be very popular!! It will be run Covid safe (eg split starts, mask wearing, social distancing etc). The number of entries allowed will depend on the restrictions at the time, so watch out for the entries to open about the 1st November.
The event will be in Tarlo River National Park, just north of Goulburn, which has some of the best spur and gully rogaining country around. The flowers will be in full bloom and the moon will be up – not that you’ll need much extra light with the long daylight by then. The Hash House will be on private property adjoining the National Park and free camping is permitted.
We will also try to run a twilight event around the western shores of Lake Burley-Griffin, Arboretum and surrounding area in the evening of Saturday 4 December. All subject to COVID restrictions and obtaining permission again. Check out the setters photos and lock it out in your diaries.
Need a walk with a difference? Pull out your old map, print one at home or just squint at your phone. However you do it - there's a virtual event fairly close by. For more details about how to do a virtual rogaine head to the web page. All instructions are there, including where the start is, how to use map run, and copies of the map. Mt Rogers Maprun Mahem
If you want something shorter, check out if there is a virtual orienteering course of your suburb on the ACT Orienteering website.
