From Eric Tse, team 69, mid-witner event (with apologies for late loading)
Having done beach, street, forest rogaines in sunny Sydney, we were massively underprepared (but warmly enough) for an ACT rogaine. Long pants, beanies - really? At least I brought ski gloves and we had enough top layers...
Arrived the day before (Brodburger, yum!) Amazing coffee in Lonsdale St for breakfast and we were rested and primed to go, cold or not.
Arriving at Hash House with our friend's no longer pristine car (we did ask if he wanted to drive) we filled out our flight plan in a rush (which naturally then became our set in stone plan) and had grand plans of following the natives, keeping to the tracks and going steadily.
'Following the natives' got tossed out the window as after 5 minutes (even with people heading the same way) we were absolutely alone as groups threw themselves into the forest, raced off or strolled behind us. Have to read the map, damn.
And hang on, all that mud and a rogaine in a State Forest (very similar to a ScoutHike for the kids) is one thing, but setting points deep amongst the thorn bushes, across raging creeks and up massive climbs is another! Especially in shorts....
And with the gale force winds and occasionally driving rain heading up to 51, 70 and 90, we were chilled but exhilarated by the view up there.
And let the record state, that our 22 minutes getting to 61 was because we tried to 'follow' the 'creek' line (more a whole forest of water moving amongst the huge thorn bushes) down rather than approach the !@#$ point from the nearest track. Ouch ouch ouch.
Our flight plan got diverted after 90, as we realised 60, 42, 44, etc were just out of our (ok, mine) capabilities and we did the inner points. Which left an awful dilemna after 73 at 1:12pm, 54 yay or nay?
A reluctant Yay saw me in agony trying to jog our way back, it looking like we'd be late for a very long time (and the march to 31 is so so long when you can see for kilometres into the distance.) Scraping 30 with 8 minutes to spare saw my friend telling me to race to 20 as well, and we scraped those two points in (where did all those people come from?) with a minute to spare.
Amazing food (the mint slice was pure sugar, the soups nourishing), a hot shower and coffee at my friend's place and we were happy, exhausted, satisfied and 'ready' for the drive home.
So thank you for putting on an amazing Rogaine (great organisation, challenging map, awesome food) and next time we'll wear long pants. But the beanies are a bridge too far for us!
