Paddy Pallin rogaine weekend a great success!

IB rogainersThe Paddy Pallin rogaine event weekend was a great success. Results are now available for both the ANU IB Special edition on Saturday and the ACT Paddy Pallin rogaine on Sunday.

If anyone is interested in returning to this area or missed out on its delights, we need people to collect controls. Please contact David Baldwin.

Saturday was a warm clear day and around 280 ANU students were out learning and testing their navigational skills ready for their Inward Bound competition in 4 weeks time.

On Sunday a thunderstorm mid-event did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the field of 170, with Olympic marathon runner Martin Dent teaming up with Brad Hetharia to win from Paul Cuthbert and visiting orienteer Lukas Frei. Julie Quinn and Simon Fairweather were third overall, winning the mixed category, and Lizzie Ingram and Sarah Buckerfield won the women's.

Check the photo gallery for photos from the event. We are interested in any feedback on splitting the event across the 2 days. It certainly reduced the crowding for parking, portaloos and catering.

A big thank you to all the landholders for sharing their wonderful properties with us, to all the volunteers for their efforts in making the event run so smoothly, and to the Jerangle School for the delicious food!

And don't miss this! Marco Ernst from Team 53 has produced a delightful video clip of his adventures on the Paddy Pallin rogaine!

A superb summer Twilight event

The 2015 Twilight event in the Ainslie - Majura Nature Park was held on a warm summer evening.  Glenn Bridgart set a great course taking in spots that people in their regular walks and rides would never go.  The top teams were set the challenge of collecting all the controls faster than any other teams while the majority of people found plenty to keep them occupied until the finish right on dark. It was fantastic to see the range of competitors we had from babies in backpacks, juniors and uni students, through to ultravets. Congratulations to Lizzie Ingham and Lachlan Dow for winning overall. For the other winners and to see how you went look at the results page.  There are lots of photos on the ACTRA SmugMug gallery. A huge thank-you to the volunteers who ran the event smoothly and also catered for many hungry rogainers.

Seasons greetings

A very merry Christmas and happy new year to all rogainers.

Our first event for 2015 will be a twilight event on Saturday 7 February 2015. If there is a total fire ban that day we will postpone for a week to Saturday 14 February. Mark it in your new calendar or diary now because it is bound to sneak up on you in the new year.

ACTRA memberships will also be due from 1 January, as we run a calendar year system for our memberships.

ACT Results from the 2014 Australian Championships

Over 20 ACTRA members headed to the Australian Champs near Malmsbury in Victoria on 11-12 October 2014.

David Baldwin and Julie Quinn were the best placed ACT team (pictured) coming second overall (second Mixed Open and first Mixed Veterans) losing out on an overall win by a measly 20 points to a gun team from NZ. The ACT also won the Intervarsity Challenge with Oleg Kovdashev and Daniel Comber-Todd from the ANU coming in first place (16th overall) (pictured below).

Other ACTRA placegetters were:

  • First Family Category - Glenn Bridgart and his daughter Jessica
  • Second Women’s Open – Susie Sprague (who teamed up with Sara Hely from Vic)
  • Third Mixed Superveterans – Jean Douglass and Ron Simpson
  • Fourth Women’s Superveterans – Colleen Mock and Parissa Poulis
  • Fourth Men’s Open - Ben Corry (who teamed up with Shane Lewis from WA).

Overall the ACT came fourth in the interstate challenge (Vic: 23 points; NSW: 12 points; QLD: 11 points; ACT: 10.5 points; Tas: 6 points; WA: 2.5 points; SA: 1 point; NT: 0 points).

Full results and event wrap-up can be found here. ACTRA photos can be found in our photo gallery. Barkley, the ACTRA mascot, also went along and details his adventures here.

Next year the ACT Champs are in NSW on the same weekend (10-11 October). Hope to see many of you there!

Spring 6/12hr Wrap-Up

2014_Spring_6_12hr.jpgRogainers were greeted with perfect sunny conditions for the Spring 6/12 hour event at Bournda National Park on the NSW South Coast on Saturday 18 October 2014. Following the midday start, some headed to the faster travelling southern half of the map, enjoying the stunning views around Bournda Lagoon and the hills around Bournda Trig, while others headed to the north of the map to enjoy the coastal views along the Kangarutha Track and the challenging controls in the north west.

Rogainers encountered a variety of wildlife, particularly goannas, and with the fine conditions it was no surprise that most teams stayed on the course as long as possible.

Congratulations to the overall winners of the 6 hour event, Lizzie Ingham and Mark Euston, with a score of 1480, and to Rob Walter and Matt Crane who won the 12 hour event by clearing the course with about an hour to spare. Congratulations also to all category winners.

Big thanks to Hartley Lifecare for providing excellent catering on the Saturday night dinner and Sunday breakfast, and also thanks to the volunteers, landowners and park ranger.

Full results can be found here, a story from Barkley, a fantastic short video from Laure (team 16), and photos from the event in our photo gallery.
