Spring 6/12hr Wrap-Up

2014_Spring_6_12hr.jpgRogainers were greeted with perfect sunny conditions for the Spring 6/12 hour event at Bournda National Park on the NSW South Coast on Saturday 18 October 2014. Following the midday start, some headed to the faster travelling southern half of the map, enjoying the stunning views around Bournda Lagoon and the hills around Bournda Trig, while others headed to the north of the map to enjoy the coastal views along the Kangarutha Track and the challenging controls in the north west.

Rogainers encountered a variety of wildlife, particularly goannas, and with the fine conditions it was no surprise that most teams stayed on the course as long as possible.

Congratulations to the overall winners of the 6 hour event, Lizzie Ingham and Mark Euston, with a score of 1480, and to Rob Walter and Matt Crane who won the 12 hour event by clearing the course with about an hour to spare. Congratulations also to all category winners.

Big thanks to Hartley Lifecare for providing excellent catering on the Saturday night dinner and Sunday breakfast, and also thanks to the volunteers, landowners and park ranger.

Full results can be found here, a story from Barkley, a fantastic short video from Laure (team 16), and photos from the event in our photo gallery.

Barkley the Koala at Bournda

bike.jpgI woke up on Saturday morning to the sound of Bell birds chirping in the trees down at the south coast. It was going to be a beautiful day. After looking around at the bush I knew it would be a long and hard day, so I contemplated taking a bike. But I had a small reach problem.

My party and I were aiming to tackle the northern high point circuit during daylight hours, return to the Hash house and go out on a shorter loop with ample aiming off and catching features during the dark hours.

Barkley's US Adventures!

The ACTRA rogaining koala mascot, Barkley, has made a video of his recent exploits in the United States attending the World Rogaining Champs in Black Hills, South Dakota in August 2014.

Barkley attended the event with Julie Quinn and David Baldwin (who ended up coming 6th overall, 2nd Mixed Veterans/3rd Mixed Open), Ron Simpson and Jean Douglass. The rogaine had lots of areas of fallen timber and high thistles to dodge but it was great to be part of an event with teams from all around the world. Barkley even got to help a lost Russian team!

This lively crew from the ACT also took Barkley on adventures in the Rocky Mountains National Park in Colorado where he met chipmunks and squirrels, as well explore multiple high passes in the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone and Grant Teton National Parks.

Check out the video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHLqAxD3rbk.

The Wintery Woden Wander

Around 130 har2014_Metro.jpgdy souls braved the dire weather predictions to take part in the 'Woden Wander' - the 2014 6hr metrogaine on Sunday 17 August 2014. It did turn out to be a cold and wet day but was saved by the fact we had the Garran Scout Hall to shelter in for map preparations at the start, and to eat the delicious food put on by the Scouts and hear results at the end of the day. For those that braved the cold they enjoyed jumping the many puddles and climbing the hills to see the great views that the Woden Valley offers. Perhaps a few people found some spots they may not have known existed prior to the event such as the pink Hindu temple in Mawson and the Woden Valley Flood Memorial.

2014_Metro2.jpgThe overall winner was Rob Walter, who cleared the course in under five hours. Susie Sprague won the Women's Open category with Clare Lonergan and Kieran Macdonell winning the Mixed Open. The Junior category was hotly contested by Ciaran Lane and Jesse Piiroinen, with Ciaran taking the honours on this occasion. Tara Sutherland and Ella Cuthbert won the family category.

Full results can be found here. Photos are also up in our gallery. Thanks once again to John Harding for sharing his snaps, especially those taken out on the course.

A big thank you to all the volunteers that helped make it all possible: Benita, Troy, Dan, Dane, Ron, Dave, Julie, Sean, Colin and Colleen.
