Barkley (2)'s excellent Spring 2016 rogaine adventure Print E-mail

image001.png

I was really excited to be going out for 12 hours; I could hardly contain myself, well actually I couldn’t contain myself and I jumped out of Natalie’s pack after only 5 minutes on the trail. Fortunately a kind soul noticed and returned me to Natalie. After that, I took good care to hold on tight and only came out at controls, or to smell the flowers, or look for something to eat…

Here is me in my favourite pouch-almost as good as being with my real mum when I was just a joey.

Spring 6/12 hr in Yanununbeyan National Park Print E-mail

The Spring 6 hr and 12 hr events will be held on Saturday 12 November. Mike and Marg Harrap are setting the event in the Yanununbeyan National Park, Northwest of Captains Flat and just under an hour's drive from Queanbeyan. The terrain is mostly lightly wooded, with the usual forest litter underfoot and some open grassy areas, making for relatively easy progress. Of course it wouldn't be a proper course without the obligatory 'steeper sections' leading to the higher areas (elevation ranges from 800m to 1200m) and some magnificent views of the surrounding hills and farmlands. There are also some well-defined fire trails running through the course. Entries are open.

Day/night events please the punters Print E-mail

IMG_6104.jpgPaul Cuthbert delivered a much-praised course for the night/day events weekend out at Tallaganda State Forest. Swelled by nearly 200 ANU Inward Bound competitors, the night event proved very popular, with 82 teams in total braving the dark side of the weekend. Some hardy souls (and soles?) backed up on the Sunday among the 35 teams in the day event. While several recent weeks of rain made for tough going through the denser patches of forest undergrowth, the weather gods mostly smiled benignly on the weekend, with just one rancorous hail storm thrown in on the Sunday afternoon for good measure.

In the five hour night event, Kieran Macdonell and Craig Cowan tied with Thomas Etheridge and William Tribe on 600 points, but took out first place by finishing 2 minutes earlier. The tussle for course clearability between course setter and elite runners was won by the setter on this occasion,IMG_6078.jpg though Martin Dent and Brad Hetharia had a strong win in the six hour day event accumulating an impressive 1040 of a possible 1500 points. Kieran Macdonnell backed up impressively after his win in the night event, partnering with Dane Roberts to finish second.

Many thanks to Paul and event co-ordinator Stephen Goggs and the other volunteers for two excellent events.

September night/day events entries are now open Print E-mail

Ferny_forest.jpgThe September night/day event entries are now open! The events are just three weekends away, so enter soon here. Lower entry fees apply until Sunday 18 September.

Not one event, but two! First, the night event, 6-11 pm on the Saturday night 24 September, then the day event 9.30-3.30 on the Sunday 25 September. And you can participate in both events for the cost of entering just one event.

The course is varied and includes a mixture of native forest and pine plantation. The native forest is very beautiful in areas with lush undergrowth and rocky outcrops. There are also loads of wombat holes. Elevation varies from around 900m to 1400m, with some spectacular views. There are many fire roads and motor bike tracks which can help travel significantly, especially in areas of thicker vegetation or when navigating at night.

Note this is only a foot event (i.e. there is no cycling category).
